Project overview
Sydney's Western Metro connects the new Western Sydney Airport to the existing rail network. As Australia's largest public transport infrastructure project, BIM was mandated to coordinate tunnels, stations, and systems across a 23 km alignment.
What made this project complex
The project required coordination between tunnel boring, station box construction, and systems fit-out — all while maintaining operations on existing rail corridors. Multiple joint venture contractors needed to work from a single source of truth.
How BIM coordination delivered
An Autodesk Construction Cloud-based CDE was established, with federated models updated weekly. Navisworks clash detection was integrated into the design review cycle, with dedicated BIM coordinators embedded within each joint venture team.
Measurable outcomes
Unified 4 JV contractors on a single CDE platform
Reduced coordination-related delays by 40%
Delivered 6 station models to LOD 300 specification
Enabled quantity extraction for early procurement packages
